Trioctyl Methyl Ammonium Chloride-- PTC in the Synthesis of L-Carvone

Nov 09, 2023

L-carvone is the main fragrance component of spearmint oil. In spearmint oil, the content of  L-carvone is 50-60%. It has a strong spearmint fragrance and is widely used in food essence, especially toothpaste, hard candy, chewing gum and various drinks. Many developed countries have been industrialized since the 1950s, partially replacing spearmint oil. At present, countries such as the United States, Japan, and the United Kingdom all produce, with an annual production capacity of 1000 tons worldwide.

Trioctyl methyl ammonium chloride
, TOMACL, also called Aliquat 336, Tri-n-octyl methyl ammonium chloride, Methyl trioctyl ammonium chloride,is an important Quaternary ammonium salt cationic surfactant, which is widely used in various fields such as daily chemical, textile, printing and dyeing, mining, asphalt, construction, plastic processing, petroleum extraction, petrochemical, etc. Especially used as phase transfer catalyst in spice chemical industry--the most prominent use for catalyst in synthesis of L-Carvone.

 Trioctyl methyl ammonium chloride

Nowadays, Trioctylmethylammonium chloride is increasingly used in the synthesis of L-carvone. It can increase the yield of synthesis and can be used as a fragrance enhancer to make the existing fragrance more obvious and long-lasting. It also has antibacterial and antifungal properties. During the synthesis process, it can be used as a preservative to help extend the product's shelf life and maintain its quality stability.
