The applications of Tetramethyl quaternary ammonium compounds

May 14, 2024

Tetramethyl quaternary ammonium compounds play an important role in phase transfer catalysis. Phase transfer catalysis refers to a catalyst that can accelerate or cause a reaction between substances in two immiscible solvents. During a reaction, the catalyst transfers a substance that actually participates in the reaction from one phase to another, so that it meets the substrate and undergoes a reaction. Phase transfer catalysis can enable ionic compounds to react with insoluble organic substances in low polarity solvents, or accelerate these reactions. A phase transfer catalyst transfers a compound that actually participates in a reaction from one phase to another, so that it meets the substrate and undergoes a reaction.

1. Tetramethyl ammonium chloride

Tetramethylammonium chloride is a phase transfer catalyst in organic synthesis, with stronger catalytic activity than triphenyl phosphorus and triethyl amine. It is a white crystalline powder at room temperature, volatile, irritating, hygroscopic, soluble in methanol, soluble in water and hot ethanol, and insoluble in ether and chloroform. Heat to above 230 ℃ to decompose into trimethyl amine and chloromethane. It is also used in the synthesis of liquid crystal epoxy compounds, polarographic and spectroscopic analysis, electronics industry, etc.

2. Tetramethylammonium iodide

Used as a polarographic analysis reagent

3. Tetramethyl ammonium hydroxide

Tetramethylammonium hydroxide is an organic base with a wide range of applications in industrial research. It is mainly used as a main catalyst in the synthesis of organosilicon series products, such as silicone oil, silicone rubber, silicone resin, etc. It can also used for polyester polymers, textiles, plastic products, food, leather, wood processing, electroplating, microbiology, etc.

4. Tetramethylammonium bromide

Used as a polarographic analysis reagent
