Quaternary ammonium salts can be used for organic active clay modification

Apr 23, 2024

Replacing positively charged inorganic ions on the surface of clay with positively charged quaternary ammonium cations to produce organic active clay with only oleophilicity. The quaternary ammonium salts used for organic active clay mainly include Octadecyl trimethyl ammonium chloride, Octadecyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride, and Dioctadecyl dimethyl ammonium chloride. Among them, Dioctadecyldimethylammonium chloride has the best effect and the largest dosage.

Organic active clay is widely used as a paint anti-settling agent and thickener to improve the quality of paint. Until recently, the amount of organic active clay was used in paint, and most of which was made from Distearyl dimethyl ammonium chloride. Organic active clay is also widely used in oilfield drilling mud to change the lubricity and rheological properties of the system, and is used as a drilling fluid to prevent oil well scrapping caused by sticking during drilling.

Dioctadecyl methyl benzyl ammonium chloride is a new type of organic active clay modifier that has emerged in recent years. The modified organic active clay has excellent swelling and settling properties and is increasingly being widely used.
