Quaternary ammonium salt cationic surfactants made from higher fatty amines

Jul 29, 2024

Alkyl trimethyl quaternary ammonium salts belong to this category. Sodium hydroxide is added to higher fatty amines and reacted with chloromethane under pressure to produce quaternary ammonium salts. The reaction is as follows:

Alkyl trimethyl ammonium chloride

For example, Dodecyl trimethyl ammonium chloride is the main representative of this type of quaternary ammonium salt cationic surfactant, which is easily soluble in water, transparent, and has good surface activity. It can be used as an additive in adhesive solidification liquids.

Alkyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride also belongs to this category. It is made by reacting alkyl dimethyl amine with benzyl chloride, and the reaction formula is:

Alkyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride

One representative example is Dodecyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride, which is easily soluble in water and forms a transparent solution. A mass fraction of a few tens of thousands has the ability to sterilize and disinfect. It is non irritating to the skin, non-toxic, and does not corrode metals. It is stable even in boiling water, and its bactericidal ability increases with increasing pH. In addition, it also has good foaming ability.
