Mild Effects of Zwitterionic Surfactants on The Skin

May 05, 2021

Due to their excellent foaming properties and mildness to the skin, zwitterionic surfactants are often added to modern liquid dishwashing detergents. They are commonly used to partially replace the anionic surfactants in the formulation, reducing the irritancy of the anionic surfactant system.

When these specific zwitterionic surfactants partially replace the anionic surfactants in the formulation, the mildness to the skin is improved. This is not only due to the inclusion of alkyl polyglycosides (APG) in the formula but also because the mixed micelles formed by the combination of zwitterionic surfactants and anionic surfactants effectively remove the "toxic" properties of the anionic surfactants.
