How does Quaternary ammonium salt kill bacteria?

Aug 06, 2024

Quaternary ammonium salts are a commonly used disinfectant, widely used in fields such as household cleaning, healthcare, food processing, and water treatment. Common Quaternary ammonium salt compounds include Tetramethyl ammonium chloride, Hexadecy ltrimethyl ammonium bromide, and Didecyl dimethyl ammonium chloride. These compounds can decompose into positively charged quaternary ammonium ions in water.

The bactericidal mechanism of Quaternary ammonium salts is mainly achieved through two methods: surface activity and microbial membrane disruption:

  1. Firstly, Quaternary ammonium salts have good surface activity, which can reduce the surface tension of the solution and make it easier for the solution to come into contact with microorganisms. The cationic part of Quaternary ammonium salts has hydrophilicity and can adsorb onto the cell membrane of microorganisms, disrupting the cell membrane structure of bacteria and causing leakage of cell contents, thereby killing bacteria.
  2. Secondly, Quaternary ammonium salts can also damage the biofilm of microorganisms. Many microorganisms form bacterial or biological membranes to protect themselves, which are composed of lipids and proteins. Quaternary ammonium salts can interact with these membrane structures, alter membrane permeability, cause membrane loss of integrity, disrupt the balance of substances inside and outside the cell, and thus kill microorganisms.

In general, Quaternary ammonium salts achieve bactericidal effects by disrupting the cell membrane structure and biofilm of microorganisms. Ahsuperchem is a professional supplier of Quaternary ammonium salts, if you want to know more about these material, please feel free to contact us.
